Two Upcoming Structural Dynamics
Open
Enrollment Workshops...
The Society for Organizational
Learning has once again selected our introductory workshop on
Structural Dynamics, Seeing and Using
the Big Picture to be
included in their upcoming "2008 Academy on Wheels."
Boeing Corporation is providing the venue for this second Academy on
Wheels to be held in Seattle. Our workshop will take place
on Thursday, 16 October 2008. It is open to anyone wishing to
enroll.
's Introduction to
Structural Dynamics Workshop was very well-received at SOL's premier "2007
Academy on Wheels " in Detroit. The Society
was founded to advance the systems thinking approach made so prominent
by Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline. We were very proud to have been
included among the presenters at this event, which drew participants
from across American industry, government and non-profit institutions.
Attendees at our workshop used a composite case study to explore how to
get underneath the loud and confusing buzz of current events in order
to see into the structural elements that create both the present and
the future. Combining the rigor of systems thinking with the creativity
of futurism, the learning group built its own Structural Dynamics Model
from scratch and used it to create alternative scenarios and explore
action strategies via a set of highly interactive exercises.
Participants had a very positive response to the session. As an IT
strategist for a Fortune 100 corporation commented, "I cannot say
enough good things about your program!"
We will be presenting this workshop again at the second Academy to be held at

People from a variety of
professional backgrounds have attended 's Introduction to
Structural Dynamics workshops. Representatives
from health care, higher education,
financial services,
management consulting, a builder of Chinese-American partnerships, an
environmental NGO, the public schools and others stepped through a
detailed
process for getting behind the headlines of any field in order to
understand
the deep structure beneath the surface of current events.
In a day packed with exercises, conversations
and concepts, the participants used facts from a case study
as a springboard to discover and live in plausible future
worlds
in order to select strategies to begin to implement in the present.

I 's
Michael Sales and colleague Jay
Vogt conducted a conference
for thoracic surgeons from many parts of the world. This
future-oriented program signals a new era in the training of clinicians
treating chest injuries. Several participants considered it a
mandate
for change in medical practice. The Center for Medical Simulation
(CMS) is a Harvard based training institution that is changing the
future of medical training. By incorporating richly
textured simulations into the training of clinicians and by using
simulation to make all who work in health care aware of the stressful
nature of the clinical environment, CMS intends to have a very dramatic
impact on patient safety. Recently, the Thoracic Surgery
Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE)
asked CMS to help it develop a vision for simulation in the training of
thoracic surgeons. Michael and Jay, a skilled agent of large
systems change, are faculty members for CMS’
Healthcare Adventures! Team building program and leadership
development program,
which provided the overall context for the work with TSFRE.
