Structural
Dynamics is a powerful way of getting underneath the events of
every day life to develop a profound understanding of what is driving
developments in any domain of interest.
Speaking of going beneath the surface, lets
look at an example: the steam pipe explosion that killed one person and
injured many others on July 18th in Manhattan. Con Edison maintains 105
miles of steam pipe under one of the most densely populated 24 square
miles in the United States. This particular pipe was inspected less
than 7 hours before this dreadful failure.
A Structural Dynamic approach to
understanding the nature of this event might touch on many relevant
factors, such as the age of this particular conduit, installed in 1924.
A report by the American Society of Civil Engineers earlier this year ,
cited by Bloomberg, estimates it would cost $1.6 trillion to repair and
replace the country's physical infrastructure. A whole lot more than
London Bridge is falling down! This is a "certainty" that has
tremendous implications for the future.
We reference this tragedy to demonstrate the
purpose of the Structural Dynamics method: behind every event is the
interplay of causal factors that, if understood, would make many
"surprises," like this one, completely understandable, if not
predictable.
The participants at our last
workshop in the Boston area absolutely raved about their
experience. Please join us at our next workshop on November 15th to
further this learning journey.

| Art and
Business do belong together |

The MFA
(Master of Fine Arts) may replace the MBA (Master of Business
Administration) as the most desirable degree by employers. Why? Many
computational and analytical processes are increasingly being automated
or performed by highly trained professionals living in low cost labor
markets such as China, the Philippines, Newfoundland and India.
Learning to think, to intuit, to see broadly, to look beyond the
expected, to discern patterns and to combine discrete factors to create
beauty, meaning and value will become more important as a source of
competitive advantage.

Structural
Dynamics at the Academy on Wheels
|
|
|
|
The Society
for Organizational Learning (SoL) has selected Structural Dynamics
as one of sixteen topics to be presented at the premier of their Academy
on Wheels, September 17-21 in Detroit. This is the first of a
number of planned regional sessions geared to the needs of members and
potential members. We are very pleased that, after a rigorous review
process, SoL chose Structural Dynamics for this innovative leadership
program. It will be presented on September 20.
SoL really knows how to convene events,
network provocative people, and foster the development of substantive
thought-leadership! Please join us in Detroit for what promises to be a
very rich learning experience for everyone.
